The United States Postal Service memorializes significant people, places and events in American History through their stamps and special postal cancellations. As a service to schools the United States Postal Service's "Wee Deliver" program creates a post office and delivery system in participating elementary schools, improving literacy in a way that is fun for students.
The Building Bridges of Peace Special Postal Cancellation is a numbered series of special postal cancellations chaining significant events and organizations from city to city across the Nation. A new issue in the series is created for each event being recognized and cancels a stamp only on the day and place that it memorializes. A "cancellation" is how the post office recognizes a stamp as valid, before delivering the envelope to the person it is addressed to. Pictorial cancellations like this one can become collector's items for those who possess them.
Send an envelope to someone important to you or keep it as a memento of this historic occasion.
